Bierzo wine
The Bierzo DO is located in the north-east Leon. It is known for the Gate of Galicia, which was established in 1989. This fertile plains surrounded by mountains have mild climate. Since the land is plain there are few frosts. The soil is moist and the best vineyards are those near rivers and with a slight slope.
Bierzo, with 3,969 hectares of vineyards in the denomination of origin, is characterised for producing great wines with a brilliant future. Its 55 wineries use only the grape varieties allowed. Its red wines may be young, aged or Reserves, and they use: Mencía and Garnacha Tintorera (Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Tempranillo as experimentals). The white wines are noted for their acidity, and some of them are fruity. The white grape varieties are Doña Blanca, Godello, Palomino and Malvasia.
